Family Hearing and Balance Center Presents Seminar for Tinnitus Sufferers

Free seminar will discuss living with tinnitus, which impacts more than 50 million people in the United States. Event will also highlight Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment (NTT), a particularly effective treatment protocol delivered through its easy-to-use Oasis device.

Akron, OH (PRWEB) August 08, 2011

Family Hearing and Balance Center will hold a free informational seminar on tinnitus Tuesday, Aug. 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Courtyard by Marriott in Stow.

Richard Reikowski, Au.D., director of audiology for Family Hearing and Balance Center, and Jerilyn Balent, Au.D., a professional training audiologist from Widex USA – one of the largest hearing air manufacturing companies in the world – will speak at the seminar. They will discuss living with tinnitus and developments in treatments for tinnitus, the widespread condition defined as the perception of sound when no external sound is present. Tinnitus affects more than 50 million people in the United States. The condition, usually brought on by exposure to loud noise, is especially significant in the military, with more than 34 percent of returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from tinnitus.

The seminar will include discussion of the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment (NTT [FREE Stock Trend Analysis]), a particularly effective treatment protocol delivered through its easy-to-use Oasis device. The device is the only FDA-cleared, patented and clinically proven medical device with documented long-term relief of severe or chronic tinnitus. Family Hearing and Balance Center is one of only two clinics in northeast Ohio to offer the NTT, which CNN recently featured in its profile on tinnitus. Curtis Amann, director with Neuromonics, will review the NTT at the seminar.

The Oasis device looks like a small consumer music player and works by desensitizing the patient's tinnitus perception. The patient wears the device for a prescribed number of hours on a daily basis, listening to soothing music that audiologists customize to each person's unique hearing and tinnitus profile. A recent independent study shows that more than 90 percent of patients who use the NTT experience a significant reduction in tinnitus.

“The Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment has proven to be one of the most effective ways to treat tinnitus on a long-term basis,” says Reikowski. “The Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment reduces hypersensitivity and annoying environmental sounds – all by allowing the user to enjoy music, without constant distraction of their tinnitus. In effect, the treatment enables the brain to create alternative pathways so tinnitus is no longer perceived.”

The seminar, free of charge, will be open to the public as well as medical providers and clinicians who find tinnitus a debilitating condition among their patients. Seating is limited; RSVP is required to Dale Hansen at 330-644-1932 or dalehansen6(at)gmail(dot)com by 5 p.m. on Aug. 20. Refreshments will be served at the event.

Media Advisory

Sweet Sounds of the Season Ring Clearer for Cancer Survivor

WHAT

After 37 years of caring for patients at Aultman Hospital, Linda Bagent RN is receiving some very special care herself this holiday season. The cancer survivor who experienced hearing loss following a series of radiation treatments will receive a free pair of hearing aids, donated by Dr. Richard Reikowski, AuD., Doctor of Audiology, of Family Hearing and Balance Center in Akron and leading hearing instrument manufacturer, Oticon, Inc.

Dr. Reikowski became aware of Linda’s need for hearing care when friends from Aultman Hospital organized a fundraiser for the East Sparta resident to help raise funds to cover the costs of hearing aids and other health care costs.  Dr. Reikowski and his staff came up with a list of Christmas wishes for Linda and worked with Oticon, Inc. to make those wishes come true in time for the holidays.

Dr. Reikowski will fit Linda with new Oticon Connect premium hearing instruments that will enhance Linda’s ability to understand speech in noiseespecially during noisy – but joyous -- holiday gatherings with friends and family.  Linda will also receive the Bluetooth Streamer accessory, which resembles a sleek MP3 music player, to allow her to connect wirelessly to cell phones, computers and other Bluetooth-enabled communication and entertainment devices.  In addition, she will also receive a new ConnectLine TV Adaptor that  allow Linda to stream audio seamlessly from her television directly to her new hearing instruments.

And in keeping the spirit of the season, Linda has chosen a discreet but stylish “champagne” color for her new hearing instruments.
